Parents often feel anxious and lack confidence when discussing adoption with their children. C.A.S.E. Adoption-Competent Therapist and Trainer, Ellen Singer, LCSW-C will teach parents what children think and feel about adoption at different developmental stages and how to share their child’s adoption story. She will address participants’ specific questions and concerns regarding when and how to share difficult/sensitive information as well as how to respond to children’s questions. When a child enters a foster or adoptive home following a history of abuse, neglect and trauma, often times, the foster or adoptive parents are broadsided by shattered expectations – the experience is nothing like they expected. They are confronted by the child’s confusing emotions and behavior, and they feel unequipped for the parenting journey. Participants will learn what is needed to provide “trauma- informed care” to children who have come from hard places.

About The Center for Adoption Support and EducationC.A.S.E. was created in May 1998 to provide post-adoption counseling and educational services to families, educators, child welfare staff, and mental health providers in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C. In addition, C.A.S.E. is a national resource for families and professionals through its training, publications, and consultations.
C.A.S.E. is a private, non-profit adoptive family support center. Its programs focus on helping children from a variety of foster care and adoptive backgrounds to receive understanding and support which will enable them to grow into successful, productive adults.
C.A.S.E. defines post-adoption services as ongoing, comprehensive support services that include education, counseling, family forums, and advocacy which address clearly identified developmental issues and social-emotional challenges frequently shared by adoptees and their families. Post-adoption involves preventive measures to ensure the preservation of adoptive families.
